This October, downtown Brattleboro will explode with vibrant murals, live hip-hop beats, and a festival atmosphere during Sucka Punch: Graffiti Jam, a three-day, family-friendly celebration of graffiti and hip-hop culture.

Set for October 3–5, 2025, the free event will take over Arch Street, right across from the Latchis Theatre, with live painting, DJs, food vendors, art activities for all ages, and even a Saturday night block party. And yes—it’s totally free.

What is Sucka Punch?

Organized by the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center (BMAC) and Juniper Creative Arts (the Brandon-based family art collective behind dozens of murals across Vermont), the festival will feature local, regional, and internationally recognized graffiti artists creating massive, colorful works before your eyes.

Come as an observer or a participant. Contribute to a community mural wall or take part in one of the interactive art activities throughout the weekend.

“Graffiti has always been about energy, connection, and community,” said Will Kasso Condry, co-founder of Juniper Creative Arts and winner of the 2022 Vermont Prize. “Jams like this keep us young—they tap into the spirit of creativity that comes from youth culture and from people coming together to celebrate expression.”

From an Idea to a Festival

The inspiration for Sucka Punch came from Mike Cota of Stone Arch Properties, who owns several buildings in downtown Brattleboro. He envisioned a graffiti festival on Arch Street and brought the idea to BMAC director Danny Lichtenfeld, who then suggested a collaboration with Juniper Creative Arts.

With Juniper’s decades of experience leading public mural projects, the pieces quickly fell into place.

“This event will showcase professional artists, invite the public to collaborate on a community mural, and create space for people of all ages to learn about graffiti as a living art form,” said Jennifer Herrera Condry, co-founder of Juniper Creative Arts. “It’s about bringing people together and showing how powerful this once marginalized culture can be when it’s embraced.”

Why It Matters

Graffiti, one of the four foundational elements of hip-hop culture, has often been misunderstood. But as Juniper Creative Arts points out, it’s now a global movement that transforms neglected spaces into vibrant canvases for connection.

“Some people continue to see graffiti through the lens of vandalism,” said Jennifer Herrera Condry. “One of our goals with this event is to reinforce the message that graffiti is a respected global art movement that beautifies neglected spaces and builds community.”

And this isn’t just about art for art’s sake. It’s about education, engagement, and transformation, principles that guide Juniper Creative Arts’ mission throughout Vermont.

“All of us at BMAC are excited to team up with Juniper Creative Arts, and we’re grateful to property owner Mike Cota for providing the space and the ‘canvas’ for a bunch of amazing DJs and graffiti artists to come do their thing in Brattleboro,” said Danny Lichtenfeld. “We love sharing art and supporting creative expression outside the museum walls, often in surprising places, so we were totally on board with Juniper’s concept of Sucka Punch as ‘the graffiti jam you didn’t see coming.’”
