In a world where every headline seems to bring new concerns—mass shootings, natural disasters, and rising crime—safety is more important than ever.

And here’s the good news…

WalletHub just released its annual report, and Vermont tops the list as the safest state in America for 2024.

The study analyzed all 50 states across 52 safety indicators grouped into five categories: Personal & Residential Safety, Financial Safety, Road Safety, Workplace Safety, and Emergency Preparedness.

So, what makes Vermont so safe?

Nearly 77% of Vermont parents feel they live in safe neighborhoods — one of the highest rates in the nation. Vermont also boasts the seventh-most neighborhood watch groups per capita. These networks not only create a sense of community but play a pivotal role in deterring crime.

And speaking of crime, Vermont has impressively low rates for aggravated assaults, murders, and thefts.

Safety extends beyond just personal well-being.

In today’s challenging economy, financial safety is equally important to residents. With one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country at just 2.1%, Vermont’s strong economy helps residents stay financially secure. It also has the lowest share of seriously underwater mortgages, and identity theft is practically a non-issue.

When it comes to driving, Vermont roads are considered some of the safest in the country. With the seventh-best road quality, 11th-fewest traffic fatalities, and the lowest percentage of drivers using phones behind the wheel, the state leads in road safety.

Safety isn’t just about avoiding harm; it’s about peace of mind. Whether it’s about protecting your family, your finances, or simply your morning commute, Vermont offers security in every aspect of life.
