Gettysburg Quarry was in operation from 1866 until 1897.Today, many abandoned quarries in Dorset are slowly being reclaimed by the forest.
Most of the marble quarried here went to Philadelphia to be used for buildings and monuments. Instead of a forest, there were fields on the hillside with roads leading to the quarries.
If you're lucky, you may spot nesting ravens perched on the cut slabs of marble.
Be sure to take the nearby spur trail to Art's Bench, where you'll have beautiful views of the Taconic Mountains.
